OUR STORY

THE HIKE THAT CHANGED IT ALL

Erika and Rob met during the height of Covid, when the world felt uncertain and everyone was finding new ways to fill their time. Like many people, they picked up new hobbies.. Erika dove into bread baking, kombucha making, and creative projects, while Rob took to long walks that quickly turned into five-mile journeys through DC. They bonded easily over a shared love of being outdoors, especially their newfound hobbies of biking and hiking, which made planning dates during lockdown surprisingly simple.

Their first date at District Winery stretched on for more than five hours, full of easy conversation and an immediate sense of comfort despite a slightly delayed arrival that has since become part of their shared sense of humor. A 17-mile bike ride followed for date number two, and by their third date, they decided to take things up a notch with a hike in Shenandoah National Park.

This third date set the tone for everything that followed. What was supposed to be a simple three-mile hike turned into a ten-mile adventure. WE got lost, daylight began to fade, cell service disappeared, and Erika’s maid of honor was frantically trying (and failing) to track her location. Through it all, they laughed, kept going, and Rob made sure Erika got home safely. Despite the unexpected detour (or perhaps because of it), they had an incredible time and decided they might as well keep exploring together.

That decision led to countless adventures across cities, states, and countries, always choosing curiosity, laughter, and each other. When it came time to propose, Rob brought things full circle, returning to where it all began. He proposed in the kitchen of the Michelin-starred restaurant they passed on that third date-- the elegant restaurant Erika had admired in passing that day. Proof that sometimes the wrong turns lead you exactly where you’re meant to be.
